Lake Wisconsin Fishery Update

January 8, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

The Lake Wisconsin Alliance (LWA) is hosting its first educational seminar for 2018 at the Lodi Women’s Club Public Library on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 6:30pm. This free event will provide initial results from the recent comprehensive fisheries survey completed on Lake Wisconsin in 2017 and an update on the recent capture of Asian Carp in the Lower Wisconsin River.

The presenter for the evening will be Nate Nye, Fisheries Biologist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR). Every five years, a comprehensive fisheries survey is completed on Lake Wisconsin to monitor panfish and game fish populations. The last survey for Lake Wisconsin was completed in 2012. The full report can be viewed by accessing the WDNR website at http://dnr.wi.gov/ and searching for “Lake Wisconsin 2012 Comprehensive Survey”.  Nate will provide some initial results of the survey completed in 2017.

During the WDNR’s fall sturgeon surveys on the Lower Wisconsin River in 2017, four bighead carp were captured in nets below the Prairie du Sac Dam, and a fifth individual was found dead on the shore.  Bighead carp have been confirmed in the Lower Wisconsin River on several occasions since 2011.  Bighead carp are part of a larger group of four species collectively known as Asian carp which can be a threat to native fish populations because they can outcompete them for food resources and alter the river ecosystem. One Asian carp species, the silver carp, can be excited by boat motors, causing them to jump out of the water – a very real threat to anyone operating a boat on the water. Nate will provide an update on the Asian carp capture and what it may mean to the Lower Wisconsin River.

The Lake Wisconsin Alliance (LWA) is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization that endeavors to balance the diverse interests of the Lake Wisconsin community while improving water quality, recreational opportunities, and sustaining a healthy ecosystem within the Lake Wisconsin watershed.
