SUMMARY:Lake Wisconsin Fishery Update
DESCRIPTION:The Lake Wisconsin Alliance (LWA) is hosting its first educational seminar for 2018 at the Lodi Women’s Club Public Library on Monday\, January 8\, 2018 at 6:30pm. This free event will provide initial results from the recent comprehensive fisheries survey completed on Lake Wisconsin in 2017 and an update on the recent capture of Asian Carp in the Lower Wisconsin River. \nThe presenter for the evening will be Nate Nye\, Fisheries Biologist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR). Every five years\, a comprehensive fisheries survey is completed on Lake Wisconsin to monitor panfish and game fish populations. The last survey for Lake Wisconsin was completed in 2012. The full report can be viewed by accessing the WDNR website at http://dnr.wi.gov/ and searching for “Lake Wisconsin 2012 Comprehensive Survey”.  Nate will provide some initial results of the survey completed in 2017. \nDuring the WDNR’s fall sturgeon surveys on the Lower Wisconsin River in 2017\, four bighead carp were captured in nets below the Prairie du Sac Dam\, and a fifth individual was found dead on the shore.  Bighead carp have been confirmed in the Lower Wisconsin River on several occasions since 2011.  Bighead carp are part of a larger group of four species collectively known as Asian carp which can be a threat to native fish populations because they can outcompete them for food resources and alter the river ecosystem. One Asian carp species\, the silver carp\, can be excited by boat motors\, causing them to jump out of the water – a very real threat to anyone operating a boat on the water. Nate will provide an update on the Asian carp capture and what it may mean to the Lower Wisconsin River. \nThe Lake Wisconsin Alliance (LWA) is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization that endeavors to balance the diverse interests of the Lake Wisconsin community while improving water quality\, recreational opportunities\, and sustaining a healthy ecosystem within the Lake Wisconsin watershed. \nIf you have questions about this event\, feel free to contact Melissa Keenan at 608-963-3428\, or melissa.keenan@saukcountywi.gov.

SUMMARY:Aquatic Invasive Species: Unwelcome Trespassers of our Lakes and Rivers
DESCRIPTION:The Lake Wisconsin Alliance (LWA) is hosting its second educational seminar for 2017 at the Lodi Women’s Club Public Library on Thursday\, March 9\, 2017 at 6:00pm. This free event will focus on aquatic invasive species found in Lake Wisconsin\, and best management practices residents and visitors of the lake can implement to prevent their spread further and into other waterways. \n\nThe presenter for the evening will be Neil Slifka\, Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator with Southwest Badger Resource Conservation & Development Council. Currently\, Lake Wisconsin is home to at least five aquatic invasive species: Curly-Leaf Pondweed\, Eurasian Watermilfoil\, Flowering Rush\, Purple Loosestrife\, and the Zebra Mussel. Once established\, these species are incredibly difficult to control and even more difficult to eliminate. Neil will provide information about these invasive species and provide recommendations on how to control and prevent their spread. \n\nThe Lake Wisconsin Alliance (LWA) is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization that endeavors to balance the diverse interests of the Lake Wisconsin community while improving water quality\, recreational opportunities\, and sustaining a healthy ecosystem within the Lake Wisconsin watershed. \n\nIf you have questions about this event\, feel free to contact Melissa Keenan at 608-963-3428\, or mkeenan@co.sauk.wi.us.

SUMMARY:November Education Seminar: Addressing Non-point Source Pollution in the Lake Wisconsin Watershed
DESCRIPTION:The Lake Wisconsin Alliance (LWA) will host its final educational seminar for 2016 at the Lodi Women’s Club Public Library\, 130 Lodi Street\, on Tuesday\, November 15th from 6:00-8:00pm. \nStaff from the Columbia County Land and Water Conservation Department will provide an overview of some of the focused programming that has been used in the past to help target non-point source (agricultural and urban runoff) reductions in the Lake Wisconsin watershed. Some of the work completed includes water quality data collection\, watershed inventory work\, and most recently the collaboration with the City of Lodi with planning the implementation of an adaptive management non-point source reduction project for Lodi Spring Creek.  This unique partnership will explore working with farmers within the watershed to install conservation practices that will reduce phosphorus runoff. \nThe Lake Wisconsin Alliance (LWA) is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization endeavoring to balance the diverse interests of the Lake Wisconsin community while improving water quality\, recreational opportunities and sustaining a healthy ecosystem within the Lake Wisconsin watershed. \nIf you have questions about this event\, feel free to contact Melissa Keenan at 608-355-4838\, or mkeenan@co.sauk.wi.us.
